1. Recombinant DNA Kit

The recombinant DNA Kit is designed to acquaint students on a fundamental level with genetic recombination through the process of conjugation between two strains of antibiotic resistant E. coli. Given two strains of E. coli which have separate types of antibiotic resistance, students will be able to determine that DNA can be transferred between bacteria, and will be able to determine whether plasmid or chromosomal DNA was transferred.

3. Antibiotic Effects Kit

This kit is designed to help acquaint students on a fundamental level with antibiotics and the Bauer-Kirby test. Because the kit uses Easygel® instead of agar dishes, comparison of the data collected in this experiment with the data used to evaluate standard Bauer-Kirby tests is not possible. Easygel® has a different set of diffusion factors which makes such a comparison inaccurate. The results, therefore, can only be used for internal comparison.
