Selective For: Lactic acid bacteria
Description: MRS is used primarily to culture lactobacilli in oral land intestinal microbial flora, as well as in meat, milk and other foodstuffs. High acetate concentrations and low pH inhibit growth of other microorganisms. Growth of lactobacilli is ensured with low concentrations of manganese, magnesium and iron contained in the medium.
Composition: Peptone, beef extract, yeast extract, dextrose, Tween 80, Diopotassium phosphate, sodium acetate, ammonium citrate, magnesium sulfate, manganese sulfate and cysteine. pH 5.7 ± 0.2.
Procedure: Standard Methodology for product being tested.
Incubation time and temperature: 72 hrs (3 days) at 37/C, or 120 hrs (5 days) at 30/C.
Interpretation: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus plantarum, and, Bifidobacterium bifidum will grow, whereas Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris and Enterococcus faecalis are inhibited.
